felt

I am hoping someone here could direct me to a place where I can buy nice felt. I have plenty of crappy acrylic felt, but I want something a little more substantial and possibly touchable. I’m thinking wool. Do they make cotton? That’d be really nice too.
It’d be great if I could just walk in somewhere locally so I could see and touch before buying, but I’ll go to an online source if that’s my best option.

I think Mardel’s used to carry wool felt. Not sure now though.
I know you must have considered making your own. Might be a fun experience and worth a try. ; )

I know hancocks sells felt on the bolts but I can’t remember if its wool or not. If you get an actual answer to your question I would love to know as well. There are soo many wonderful things to do with wool felt, it would be nice to actually be able to buy it. :)

so I just called hancocks (the one on 240 and penn) and the sales associate said yes they did carry wool felt. This is me hoping that she didn’t disregard “wool” and just hear felt. I hope that helps!

Cotton doesn’t felt. Wool felt is lovely. You can get a wool/rayon blend felt which is less expensive than pure wool, and really quite lovely as well.

A Child’s Dream is a good site but I like Weir Dolls (http://www.weirdollsandcrafts.com/) — last time I checked they were cheaper and they are really, really nice. I’d love to find out that Hancock’s carried wool felt but I have my doubts. I have some from both places that I could try to remember to bring tomorrow night if you’d like.

At the box craft stores, I’ve only seen 85% wool felt.
But I am totally in love with Weeks Dye Works Hand-dyed Wool Felt. More expensive, yes, but the felt feels scrumptious and I love the effect of dyed herringbone-patterned wool!

Believe or not, I found some cotton felt not to long ago…now it might have been a blend…but it doesn’t itch like wool. I wish it was easier to get wool felt. I live in the UK and I can order it from a natural children’s toy store on the net. It would be nice like you said though, to pick it up and touch it! I’ve made some stuff out of acrylic but it seems to pill so quickly, and isn’t NEAR as soft!

This may be a stupid suggestion, but have you looked at Helen Enox on SW 59th? She’s got enough specialty fabrics that it might just be worth a look.

Ok this may sound traumatic, but I promise it will be the most amazing felt you have ever touched. Ready? Go to Goodwill (or someplace similar, I have never paid more than like $4), buy a cashmere sweater (this will probably of a fine cashmere thread you can’t recycle anyways), then (this is the part that requires fortitude) wash the sweater in hot soapy water in your machine. Cut sweater into appropriate sized pieces as you need.
