Hogwarts House Friendship Bracelets

While in Phoenix Rising, I handed out a few of these friendship bracelets. I hadn’t had time to make loads of them, but I did manage to friend a few special people anyway. I thought it’d be nice to share directions to make them.

Gryffindor Bracelet

A classic knotted friendship bracelet in colors and pattern inspired by the “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” style scarf.

Gryffindor Bracelet Hufflepuff bracelet

Materials:
DMC embroidery floss in chosen house’s colors (see key below)
safety pin or tape

Color Key (my suggestions, use what you have or what you’d like):
(House - Main Color, Contrast Color)
Gryffindor - Red 815, Gold 676
Hufflepuff - Yellow 973, Black 310
Ravenclaw - Blue 336, Bronze 680
Slytherin - Green 935, Silver 415

1. Cut three 4-foot lengths of DMC floss; 2 of Main Color (MC) and one of Contrast Color (CC).

2. Tie the three strands together in a knot 8 inches from the end.

3. Push a safety pin through the knot and attach to a surface to hold the end stable while you work. I like to use the knee of my jeans or the laces of my shoe. You may also use tape to hold it to a table, but this may not be as strong.

4. Braid the shorter end of the bracelet for 2 or 3 inches and tie off with another knot.

5. Switch to the longer end to being your knotting as follows:

Notes on knotting:
a. To make knots -

  • Separate the color you want to work from the other strands.
  • Tie knot with your color around the other strands
  • Pull tight so the other strands do not show through.
  • b. Be sure to alternate between your two strands of MC thread so they will both end up long enough to get you through the end.

    c. When you work consecutive knots with the same strand of thread, the knots will form a nifty spiral around the bracelet.

    6. Tie 25 knots in MC, 2 in CC, 5 in MC, and 2 in CC.

    7. Tie [20 in MC, 2 in CC, 5 in MM, 2 in CC] and repeat between brackets 3 times. (Omit one or two repeats to make a child’s size.)

    8. Tie 25 more knots in MC.

    9. Secure by knotting all 3 strands together again. Braid to match the beginning of the bracelet. Secure with knot. Trim ends even.

    10. Tie finished bracelet onto your friend. Smile, join arms and sing Hogwarts’ School Song.

I was searching for a site for just this kind of bracelet to teach to my granddaughters. Thanks so much, your bracelet is beautiful. I am sure they will love making a dozen each of them.
